25 April 2008
Speaking today, on World Malaria Day 2008, Conservative International Development Spokesman Andrew Mitchell said:
"This easily preventable disease will kill a million people in 2008.
"That's why a Conservative Government will spend 500m a year to tackle the disease. The money will help strengthen healthcare systems in poor countries and scale-up efforts to protect families from infection through anti-mosquito measures and bed-nets.
"Our International Aid Watchdog will help ensure that the money is spent effectively.
"Together we will win the fight against this terrible disease."
* A future Conservative government will spend a minimum of 500m a year tackling malaria until the Millennium Development Goal on malaria has been met.
* These funds would come from the international development budget, which the Conservative Party is committed to increasing to 0.7% of UK GDP by 2013.
* The Conservative Party is committed to improving the transparency and effectiveness of international aid. Andrew Mitchell has proposed the creation of an International Aid Watchdog that would provide independent and objective evaluation of the effectiveness of British aid.
